Background to the 2014 Exhibition

At least 200 works of arts from over 80 prominent Scottish artists are being included in a special new exhibition, called Art for Care, in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care. This is a unique event bringing art and care together in a major fundraising and awareness exercise.

Established artists such as Muriel Barclay, Gerard Burns, Marion Drummond and Glen Scouller will be for sale alongside art and jewellery from up and coming artists, aiming to raise at least £20,000 from the event. The artists have all agreed to donate at least 50% from the sale of each art work. To be held at the Glasgow Lighthouse on Mitchell St from 12-14 May 2014 this new exhibition will give visitors an exclusive opportunity to see and purchase many great works of art in one place.

In addition to the art works, Blair & Sheridan jewellers have created 100 strictly limited edition silver daffodils especially for the event and also a one off golden daffodil with a diamond in the middle. These will be sold at the Show and the golden daffodil will be auctioned online at www.mctears.co.uk.

Glen Scouller added: “I have been a long standing supporter of the wonderful work done by Marie Curie and as a friend of the late Donald Storrie and his wife May, I am only too happy to support the continuing good work undertaken by May Storrie who is now patron of the Glasgow Hospice.”

Artist Marion Drummond added: “Last year I lost my best friend to cancer.  She dearly wanted to get home, having being languishing in the Southern General Hospital with patients dying around her.  A place could not be found for her in a hospice but Alison won her battle to get home. This meant her friends sitting with her day and night for the eleven days it took for the cancer to claim her. We were so lucky to receive the help of Marie Curie nurses who were with us when we sorely needed them.  I do hope someone will buy my little oil painting (pictured above) and help support Marie Curie Cancer Care.”

Devised by May Storrie, Marie Curie Patron, in memory of her late husband Donald Storrie who led the Big Build Appeal for the Marie Curie Hospice, Glasgow and who sadly died there of pulmonary fibrosis two years ago, the event may become an annual exhibition. May said: “Art was one of Donald’s loves and so it is very appropriate that we are bringing together some of the finest Scottish artists of the day in raising money in memory of Donald for Marie Curie, which was Donald’s special charity. The money raised will help people in Glasgow and the West be cared for at home or in the Marie Curie hospice.” 

Murray Easton, Fundraising Manager said; “Marie Curie is delighted to introduce a new event to our annual calendar and it is extremely exciting to have the support of so many fantastic artists and designers. If we raise our target from the event then we will be funding over 1,000 hours of Marie Curie nursing care in the west of Scotland.”

The exhibition will begin with a VIP preview on Sun 11 May where certain art works will be auctioned and it will then be open to the public from Mon –Wed. The artists include: Leslie Banks, Marion Drummond, Jane Blair, Cecilia Forrest, Douglas Roulston, Gordon Wilson, Richard Wincop, Stephen Deeley, Connie Simmers and Claire Harkess, as well as some jewellery. A signed and numbered Jack Vettriano print will also be up for auction.
